SUBJECT: Proposal for New Classroom Desks for Room 2602 (Bangkadi Campus)

Problem

The students who study in Room 2602 at Bangkadi Campus have difficulty moving in and out of the current desks. The existing desk design restricts movement, making it hard for students to enter or exit seats without disturbing others. This results in frustration, slower class transitions, and reduced productivity.

Background

In many SIIT classrooms, desks allow students to easily slide in and out, supporting smooth movement and more interactive learning. However, the desks in Room 2602 feature flip-side entry surfaces that work individually but cause problems when arranged in rows.

Key issues observed by students and instructors include:

  • Students must lift the desk surface to exit, forcing the neighboring student to also move
  • Chairs and desk joints frequently get stuck, delaying transitions
  • Instructors have difficulty walking to the back rows due to narrow pathways
  • Items (laptops, water bottles, stationery) are frequently dropped while students try to maneuver around the desks
    • A quick survey: 67% of students said they dropped items at least once per week due to tight desk access

Survey results from students across classes using Room 2602:

Course Section% Students Who Dislike the Desk Design
GT5302 Sec. 199%
CSS325 Sec. 795%
CSS30293%

Additionally, instructors reported wasted teaching time due to students struggling to settle into seats and difficulty moving around the room during lectures.

These issues discourage interaction, limit mobility, and negatively affect the classroom experience, contradicting SIIT’s commitment to modern learning environments.

Solution

Purchase new desks with a more ergonomic and open design, allowing smooth student movement and improved accessibility. The estimated cost is approximately $200 per room, and recycling or reselling existing desks could reduce expenses further.

Benefits

  • Faster student entry/exit increases class efficiency and reduces disruptions
  • Improved safety, fewer dropped items, fewer mobility issues
  • More inclusive classroom setup (especially for students who need extra space)
  • Increased instructor mobility supports engagement and active learning
  • Better overall learning atmosphere and productivity

Conclusion

Although purchasing new desks represents an investment, the long-term benefits, efficiency, accessibility, improved student comfort, and enhanced learning experience, far outweigh the costs. I respectfully request that SIIT consider upgrading the desks in Room 2602 to promote a more productive and student-friendly learning environment.

I look forward to a positive improvement and a more engaging classroom experience at Bangkadi Campus.
