Linear Combinations (ผลรวมเชิงเส้น)

Linear combinations are obtained by multiplying vectors by scalars, and by adding them together.

,vp⃗∈Rn\vec{v_1},\vec{v_2},\dotso,\vec{v_p} \in \mathbb{R}^n, และ c1,c2,…
  • นิยามของ Linear Combination คือ y⃗=c1v1⃗+c2v2⃗+…+cpvp⃗\boxed{\vec{y}=c_1\vec{v_1}+c_2\vec{v_2}+\dotso+c_p\vec{v_p}}
    • เรียก y⃗\vec{y} นี้ว่าเป็น Linear Combination ของ v1⃗,v2⃗,… ,vp⃗\vec{v_1},\vec{v_2},\dotso,\vec{v_p} ซึ่งมี Weight เป็น c1,c2,… ,cpc_1,c_2,\dotso,c_p ตามลำดับ

Span

  • Span คือ Set ที่รวบรวมทุก y⃗\vec{y} ที่เป็นไปได้ ซึ่งเกิดจาก Linear Combination ของ v1⃗,v2⃗,… ,vp⃗\vec{v_1},\vec{v_2},\dotso,\vec{v_p}

    • เรียกว่า Span{v1⃗,v2⃗,… ,vp⃗}\text{Span}\{\vec{v_1},\vec{v_2},\dotso,\vec{v_p}\}

Span must have at least one solution!

Vector Space (Linear Space)

  • Linear spaces (or vector spaces) are sets that are closed with respect to linear combinations.
    • In other words, a given set is a linear space if the elements can be multiplied by scalars and added together. The results of these algebraic operations are elements that still belong to.
  • Check 2
Vector
Scalar
    1. If u⃗\vec{u} and v⃗\vec{v} are objects in VV, then u⃗+v⃗\vec{u} + \vec{v} is in VV.
    2. u⃗+v⃗=v⃗+u⃗\vec{u} + \vec{v} = \vec{v} + \vec{u}
    3. u⃗+(v⃗+w⃗)=(u⃗+v⃗)+w⃗\vec{u} + (\vec{v} + \vec{w}) = (\vec{u} + \vec{v}) + \vec{w}
    4. There exists an object in VV, called the zero vector, that is denoted by 0⃗\vec{0} and has the property that 0⃗+u⃗=u⃗+0⃗=u⃗\vec{0} + \vec{u} = \vec{u} + \vec{0} = \vec{u} for all u⃗\vec{u} in VV.
    5. For each u⃗\vec{u} in VV, there is an object −u⃗-\vec{u} in VV, called a negative of u⃗\vec{u}, such that u⃗+(−u⃗)=(−u⃗)+u⃗=0⃗\vec{u} + (-\vec{u}) = (-\vec{u}) + \vec{u} = \vec{0}.
    6. If kk is any scalar and u⃗\vec{u} is any object in VV, then ku⃗k\vec{u} is in VV.
    7. k(u⃗+v⃗)=ku⃗+kv⃗k(\vec{u} + \vec{v}) = k\vec{u} + k\vec{v}
    8. (k+m)u⃗=ku⃗+mu⃗(k + m)\vec{u} = k\vec{u} + m\vec{u}
    9. k(mu⃗)=(km)(u⃗)k(m\vec{u}) = (km)(\vec{u})
    10. 1u⃗=u⃗1\vec{u} = \vec{u}
Vector

Standard Linear Spaces (Rn\mathbb{R}^n)

  • the span of a set of vectors is the set of all linear combinations of the vectors

Plane
  • Span of 1 vector is a line

  • Span of 2 vector is a plane R3\mathbb{R}^3

Polynomial Spaces (PnP_n)

  • Converting polynomials into vectors (no coordinate)
1+2x+3x2+7x4→(12307⋮)1+2x+3x^2+7x^4\xrightarrow{}\left( \begin{matrix} 1 \\ 2 \\ 3 \\ 0\\7\\\vdots \end{matrix} \right)

Matrix Spaces (Mm×nM_{m\times n})

Linear Independence (ความอิสระเชิงเส้น)

    • y⃗=c1v1⃗+c2v2⃗+…+cpvp⃗\vec{y}=c_1\vec{v_1}+c_2\vec{v_2}+\dotso+c_p\vec{v_p} — ให้เปลี่ยนเป็น
    • 0⃗=c1v1⃗+c2v2⃗+…+cpvp⃗\vec{0}=c_1\vec{v_1}+c_2\vec{v_2}+\dotso+c_p\vec{v_p}
      • มองเป็น Homogenous System ยังไงก็ต้องมีคำตอบอย่างน้อย 1 ตัวอยู่แล้ว (ยังไงต้องมี!) นั่นก็คือ c1=c2=…=cp=0c_1=c_2=\dotso=c_p=0 (Trivial Solution)
,vp⃗\vec{v_1}, \vec{v_2},\dotso,\vec{v_p} Linearly Independent
,vp⃗\vec{v_1}, \vec{v_2},\dotso,\vec{v_p} Linearly Dependent

Method 1

Reduced Echelon Form

Method 2

Augmented Matrix
Trivial Solution → Linearly Independent

Lecture 9
  1. ถ้ามี Vector pp ตัว ใน RnR^n
    • ถ้า p>np>n → Linearly Dependent
  2. ถ้ามี Vector pp ตัว ใน PnP_n
    • ถ้า p>n+1p>n+1 → Linearly Dependent
  3. ถ้ามี Vector pp ตัว ใน Mm×nM_{m\times n}
    • ถ้า p>mnp>mn → Linearly Dependent
    • ถ้า det⁡≠0\det \ne 0 → Linearly Independent
    • ถ้า det⁡=0\det = 0 → Linearly Dependent
,vp⃗\vec{v_1}, \vec{v_2},\dotso,\vec{v_p} จะ Span ใน RnR^n ด้วย
    1. AA หา A−1A^{-1} ได้
    2. det⁡A≠0\det A \ne 0
    3. Homogenous (Ax⃗=0⃗A\vec{x}=\vec{0}) เป็น Trivial Solution
    4. System of Equation (Ax⃗=b⃗A\vec{x}=\vec{b})
    5. Row Vector ของ AA เป็น Linearly Independent ต่อกัน
    6. Column Vector ของ AA เป็น Linearly Independent ต่อกัน

A Geometric Interpretation of Linear Independence

  • Two vectors in R2\mathbb{R}^2 or R3\mathbb{R}^3 are linearly independent if and only if they do not lie on the same line when they have their initial points at the origin. Otherwise one would be a scalar multiple of the other.

  • Three vectors in R3\mathbb{R}^3 are linearly independent if and only if they do not lie in the same plane when they have their initial points at the origin. Otherwise at least one would be a linear combination of the other two.
