Instantaneous Power and Average Power

Instantaneous Power

  • The instantaneous power delivered to this circuit element is the product of the voltage v(t)v(t) and the current i(t)i(t), so that p(t)=v(t)×i(t)p(t)=v(t)\times i(t)

v(t)=Vm(cos⁡ωt+θV)i(t)=Im(cos⁡ωt+θI)v(t)=V_{\mathrm{m}}\left(\cos \omega t+\theta_{\mathrm{V}}\right) \quad \quad i(t)=I_{\mathrm{m}}\left(\cos \omega t+\theta_{\mathrm{I}}\right)
p(t)=VmImcos⁡(ωt+θV)cos⁡(ωt+θI)p(t)=V_{\mathrm{m}} I_{\mathrm{m}} \cos \left(\omega t+\theta_{\mathrm{V}}\right) \cos \left(\omega t+\theta_{\mathrm{I}}\right)
  • โดยใช้เอกลักษณ์การคูณของ Trigonometry — cos⁡αcos⁡β=cos⁡(α+β)+cos⁡(α−β)2\cos \alpha \cos \beta=\frac{\cos (\alpha+\beta)+\cos (\alpha-\beta)}{2}
p(t)=VmIm2[cos⁡(θV−θI)+cos⁡(2ωt+θV+θI)]p(t)=\frac{V_{\mathrm{m}} I_{\mathrm{m}}}{2}\left[\cos \left(\theta_{\mathrm{V}}-\theta_{\mathrm{I}}\right)+\cos \left(2 \omega t+\theta_{\mathrm{V}}+\theta_{\mathrm{I}}\right)\right]

Average Power

Average Power

Paverage=12VmImcos⁡(θV−θI)\Huge\boxed{P_{\text{average}}=\frac{1}{2}V_mI_m\cos(\theta_V-\theta_I)}
  • หรือถ้าจะมองเป็น Phasor โดย V(ω)=Vm∠θV\mathbf{V}(\omega)=V_m\angle\theta_V และ I(ω)=Im∠θI\mathbf{I}(\omega)=I_m\angle\theta_I P=12RE[VI∗]=VmIm2cos⁡(θV−θI)P=\frac{1}{2}\mathbf{RE[VI^*]}=\frac{V_mI_m}{2}\cos(\theta_V-\theta_I)

Power in AC Circuits – Special Cases

Purely Resistive Circuit (θVθ_V = θIθ_I)

  • Voltage and current are in phase.
  • The circuit contains only a resistive load (R).
  • Power absorbed: P=12VmIm=12Im2R=12∣I∣2RP = \frac{1}{2}V_m I_m = \frac{1}{2}I_m^2 R = \frac{1}{2}|\mathbf{I}|^2 R
P=Irms2RP=I_{\text{rms}}^2R

Purely Reactive Circuit (θV−θIθ_V-θ_I = ±90°)

  • Voltage and current are 90° out of phase.
  • The circuit is purely inductive (L) or capacitive (C).
  • Average power absorbed: P=12VmImcos⁡(90∘)=0P = \frac{1}{2}V_m I_m \cos(90^\circ) = 0
  • The reactive load absorbs no average power.

Summary

  • Resistive load (R): Absorbs power continuously.
  • Reactive load (L or C): Absorbs zero average power.

Maximum Average Power Transfer

    • แต่ในหัวข้อนี้จะมาพิจารณาใน AC กันบ้างนะ!

สรุป Maximum Average Power Transfer (ใน AC) จะเกิดขึ้นเมื่อ ZL=ZTh∗\mathbf{Z_L}=\mathbf{Z_{Th}^*}

ZL=RL+jXL=RTh−jXTh=ZTh∗\Huge\boxed{\mathbf{Z_L}=R_L+jX_L=R_{Th}-jX_{Th}=\mathbf{Z_{Th}^*}} Pmax=∣VTh∣28RTh\Huge\boxed{P_{\text{max}}=\frac{|\mathbf{V_{Th}|^2}}{8R_{Th}}}
RL=∣ZTh∣R_L=|\mathbf{Z_{Th}}|
MAPT to a purely resistive load, the load impedance is equal to the magnitude of the Thevenin impedance.
PmaxP_{\text{max}} Pmax=12∣I∣2RP_{\text{max}}=\frac{1}{2}|\mathbf{I}|^2R

Step for Problem-Solving Strategy

  1. Remove the load ZLZ_L and find the Thevenin equivalent for the remainder of the circuit.
  2. Construct the circuit
  3. Select ZL=ZTh∗\mathbf{Z_L}=\mathbf{Z_{Th}^*}, and then IL=Voc/2RTh\mathbf{I_L}=\mathbf{V_{oc}}/2R_{Th} and the maximum average power transfer =12∣I∣2R=Voc2/8RTh=\frac{1}{2}|\mathbf{I}|^2R=\mathbf{V_{oc}^2}/8R_{Th}

Question

สูตรแรก: Pmax=∣VTh∣28RTh\boxed{P_{\text{max}}=\frac{|\mathbf{V_{Th}|^2}}{8R_{Th}}}

สูตรสอง: Pmax=12∣I∣2R\boxed{P_{\text{max}}=\frac{1}{2}|\mathbf{I}|^2R}

Question

Effective or RMS Value (of a Periodic Waveform)

  • The effective value of a voltage is a measure of its effectiveness in delivering power to a load resistor.
  • The concept of an effective value comes from a desire to have a sinusoidal voltage (or current) deliver to a load resistor the same average power as an equivalent DC voltage (or current).
    • มองง่าย ๆ คือ เอาคลื่นสลับ (AC) มาเทียบว่า “ถ้าเราอยากจ่ายพลังงานได้เท่ากัน แต่ใช้ DC แทน จะต้องใช้เท่าไหร่?”

Ieff=1T∫0Ti2dtVeff=1T∫0Tv2dt\boxed{I_{\text{eff}}=\sqrt{\frac{1}{T}\int_0^T i^2dt}} \quad \quad \quad \boxed{V_{\text{eff}}=\sqrt{\frac{1}{T}\int_0^T v^2dt}} Ieff=Irms=Im2Im=Irms⋅2I_{\text{eff}}=I_{\text{rms}}=\frac{I_m}{\sqrt{2}} \quad \quad \quad I_m=I_{\text{rms}}\cdot\sqrt{2} Veff=Vrms=Vm2Vm=Vrms⋅2V_{\text{eff}}=V_{\text{rms}}=\frac{V_m}{\sqrt{2}} \quad \quad \quad V_m=V_{\text{rms}}\cdot\sqrt{2}
Paverage=VrmsIrmscos⁡(θV−θI)\Huge\boxed{P_{\text{average}}=V_{\text{rms}}I_{\text{rms}}\cos(\theta_V-\theta_I)}

Question

  • เขียนสมการ i(t)i(t) หรือ v(t)v(t) แล้วทำ i2(t)i^2(t) หรือ v2(t)v^2(t) ให้เรียบร้อย
    1T∫0Ti2(t) dt\frac{1}{T}\int_0^T i^2(t)\,dt
  1. Root
    Irms=1T∫0Ti2(t) dtI_{\text{rms}} = \sqrt{\frac{1}{T}\int_0^T i^2(t)\,dt}

Apparent Power and Power Factor

v(t)=Vm(cos⁡ωt+θV)i(t)=Im(cos⁡ωt+θI)v(t)=V_{\mathrm{m}}\left(\cos \omega t+\theta_{\mathrm{V}}\right) \quad \quad i(t)=I_{\mathrm{m}}\left(\cos \omega t+\theta_{\mathrm{I}}\right)
V=Vm∠θVI=Im∠θI\mathbf{V}=V_m\angle\theta_V \quad \quad \mathbf{I}=I_m\angle\theta_I
  • The average power is Paverage=VmIm2cos⁡(θV−θI)P_{\text{average}}=\frac{V_mI_m}{2}\cos(\theta_V-\theta_I)
Paverage=VrmsIrmscos⁡(θV−θI)P_{\text{average}}=V_{\text{rms}}I_{\text{rms}}\cos(\theta_V-\theta_I)
      2. pf=cos⁡(θV−θI)pf = \cos(\theta_V-\theta_I)
  • The power factor is the cosine of the phase difference between voltage and current. It is also the cosine of the angle of the load impedance.
Z=VI=Vm∠θVIm∠θI=VmIm∠(θV−θI)\mathbf{Z}=\frac{\mathbf{V}}{\mathbf{I}}=\frac{V_m\angle\theta_V}{I_m\angle\theta_I}=\frac{V_m}{I_m}\angle(\theta _V-\theta_I)
Lagging (Inductive load)
Leading (Capacitive load)

Complex Power

  • ในทางเดียวกันที่เราเขียน v(t)=10cos⁡(ωt+10∘)→V=10∠10∘v(t)=10\cos(\omega t +10^{\circ})\to \mathbf{V}=10\angle 10^{\circ}

Phasor

  • We now turn our attention to the frequency-domain representations of the element current and voltage

    I=Im∠θI\mathbf{I}=I_m\angle\theta_I V=Vm∠θV\mathbf{V}=V_m\angle\theta_V
  • The complex power delivered to the element is defined to be

    S=VI∗2=(Vm∠θV)(Im∠−θI)2=VmIm2∠θV−θI\mathbf{S}=\frac{\mathbf{VI^{*}}}{2}=\frac{(V_m\angle\theta_V)(I_m\angle-\theta_I)}{2}=\frac{V_mI_m}{2}\angle\theta_V-\theta_I S=VrmsIrms∗\mathbf{S}=\mathbf{V_{rms}}\mathbf{I_{rms}^*}
  • The magnitude of S\mathbf{S} is called the apparent-power.

    ∣S∣=VmIm2|\mathbf{S}|=\frac{V_m I_m}{2}
  • Converting the complex power S\mathbf{S} from polar to rectangular form gives

    S=VmIm2cos⁡(θV−θI)+jVmIm2sin⁡(θV−θI)\mathbf{S}=\frac{V_m I_m}{2}\cos(\theta_V-\theta_I)+j\frac{V_m I_m}{2}\sin(\theta_V-\theta_I) S=P+jQ\mathbf{S}=P+jQ
    • โดยที่ PP คืออะไร จำได้มั้ยยยยยยยย… (Average Power) Paverage=VmIm2cos⁡(θV−θI)P_{\text{average}}=\frac{V_mI_m}{2}\cos(\theta_V-\theta_I)
    • และ QQ เรียกว่า Reactive Power (โดยมีหน่วยเป็น VAR (Volt-ampere-reactive)) Q=VmIm2sin⁡(θV−θI)Q=\frac{V_m I_m}{2}\sin(\theta_V-\theta_I)
      • Reactive Power (QQ), the physical interpretation of reactive power is the time rate of energy flow back and forth between the source and the reactive components of the load (Power ที่เป็นตัวแหล่งจ่ายระหว่าง L กับ C)
